Half Term: Monday 17th February- Friday 21st February
International Mother Language Day: (please see below)
Next half term our topic is ‘People Who Help Us’. We are very keen for the children to meet and learn about people that work in our community. If you have a job that relates to this (for example, nurse, doctor, police, coach, dentist, scout/brownie volunteer) and would be happy to talk to the children, please let us know. Thank you.
International Mother Language Day
As part of our cultural learning, on Thursday 27th February 2020 we will celebrate International Mother Language Day. This is a day celebrated every year by UNESCO.
To celebrate the diverse cultures of the pupils and families at Avenue Primary, we would like pupils to come dressed in the national costume of their country of origin or wear the colours representing their home country’s flag. Pupils may also wear the national sports kit for their country of origin, e.g. England football team strip, New Zealand rugby team strip.
During the day, pupils will complete activities related to the different languages spoken by the Avenue school community. They will research “endangered” languages and use google translate to find simple expressions, tongue twisters and will also sing songs in different languages. They can also bring a traditional object related to their country of origin and show it to the class.
We are all looking forward to celebrating the variety of languages and cultures in our school community.
